Sensory-Motor Development
|
|
Small Muscle – Toddlers 24 to 36 months can:
|
|
|
- use crayons holding them by the fingers to make simple lines,
- build a seven to ten block tower,
- turn pages one at a time,
- remove paper wrappings from small objects, and
- string long beads.
|
|
|
Large Muscle - Toddlers 24 to 36 months can:
|
|
|
- stop, start, and change directions while walking,
- walk on tiptoes,
- jump on both feet,
- squat without falling,
- stand from a squat without using hands to push up,
- kick a large ball,
- throw a ball without falling,
- push and steer a toy,
- paint with a small brush, and
- run.
|
|
|
Self-Help – Toddlers 24 to 36 months can:
|
|
|
- usually stay dry all night,
- pull down their pants, but may need help pulling them up,
- unzip clothes,
- pull on simple clothes,
- take clothes off,
- wash and dry their hands,
- comb and brush hair,
- help put things away,
- use a fork or spoon to eat, and
- pour from a small pitcher but may still spill.

|
At 24 to 36 months of age toddlers may:
|
|
|
- use simple three-word sentences such as "See Daddy coming,"
- say their full name including nicknames,
- use words to show they are happy, sad, or angry,
- often talk to themselves while playing,
- begin to use plurals of words,
- listen to and memorize simple nursery rhymes,
- ask many questions,
- make their voices soft and loud,
- use "I", "me", or "my" to refer to himself or herself,
- use "you" and "your" to refer to others, and
- follow simple directions.

Social-Personal Development
|
|
Toddlers 24 to 36 months of age may:
|
|
|
- have a sense of humor, enjoy surprises by playing tricks,
- be easily frustrated and show anger by throwing objects on the floor,
- be proud of their work,
- protect their own things from others,
- enjoy doing the same things over and over again and may resist changes,
- begin to imitate adults,
- be constantly active,
- explore and touch everything possible,
- refer to themselves as "I" or "me" and refer to others as "you",
- watch other children playing and sometimes will join them for a few minutes,
- help put their own things away, and
- start an activity after the suggestion is made.

|
At 24 to 36 months of age toddlers now:
|
|
|
- take simple objects apart and put them back together,
- remember where many things are kept and how to get them,
- can learn from experience and remember what has happened before,
- name parts of the body of an animal, person, or themselves,
- know what body parts are used for,
- understand the meaning of the word "another",
- know what they can eat and what they should not,
- know what some objects are used for,
- can match colors, sizes, shapes, or textures,
- recognize themselves and familiar adults in snapshots,
- can make simple choices,
- can tell you whether another child is a boy or a girl, and
- understand "how many" or "two".
